Breast Reduction and Back Problems
Sometimes a woman's breasts are too large for the rest of her body. This condition, called breast hypertrophy, can create a series or problems. Overly large breasts can place additional stress on your spine and the muscles in your abdomen, chest, and back.
Back pain is the most common complaint from women whose breasts are too large in proportion to the rest of their bodies. Large breasts can create a reduction in the natural curve of your upper and mid-back region. When your upper vertebrae are altered, it can affect your lower vertebrae, which takes on additional stress.
Some women with abnormally large breasts suffer from back pain that becomes so severe, it actually changes their posture. This can put these women at risk for spinal deformity. Proportionately large breasts can also put you at risk for repetitive stress injuries to your shoulders and upper extremities.
Active women with very large breasts are especially prone to back pain. Constant movement of the breasts due to high impact exercises can put additional stress on the back, as it tries to support this movement. Exercise can also result in acute pain as a result of muscular oxygen deprivation and fatigue.
If you are having back problems, a breast reduction can help you alleviate your painful symptoms and get you moving forward with your life in a comfortable manner. If you live in the Alexandria, Virginia area, please contact our Alexandria plastic surgery office to learn more.
